Embodied Leadership & Somatic Education

A Hybrid 200-Hour Certification Integrating Trauma Theory, Nervous System Science, and Somatic Practices.

Join our Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher Training in Costa Rica, a 200-hour Yoga Alliance-approved program that combines scientific understanding of trauma with the embodied wisdom of yoga.

This training offers an evidence-informed foundation in neuroscience, mindfulness, and somatic psychology, empowering you to teach and lead with empathy, ethics, and skill.

The program begins with an online portion that introduces key concepts in trauma theory and nervous system education. This online portion is predominantly self-paced pre-recorded videos with three live zoom calls for integration, connection, and Q&A.

The program ends with a 10-day in-person immersion at Aves Resort in Montezuma, Costa Rica, a setting designed to support regulation, community learning, and reflective practice all while immersed in nature.

Evidence-Informed, Ethically Grounded, Embodiment-Centered.

Our Training emphasizes that Trauma-Informed teaching is not a method, it is a paradigm of awareness and relational integrity.

Through this lens, yoga becomes a practice of nervous system regulation, compassion, and connection.

You will leave prepared to facilitate classes and communities where students feel seen, supported, and empowered, integrating the science of safety with the art of presence.

What Makes Our Training Unique

This training bridges modern trauma science and traditional yoga philosophy to provide a comprehensive framework for embodied healing. Participants will explore the intersection of Polyvagal Theory, somatic experiencing, attachment theory and mindfulness-based interventions with the art and poetry of ancient yogic wisdom.

Through both academic study and experiential learning, you will develop the capacity to:

  • Understand how trauma impacts the body, brain, and relationships.
  • Apply trauma-sensitive teaching methods that emphasize safety, choice, and empowerment in your yoga classes.
  • Recognize signs of dysregulation and guide practices that support nervous system balance.
  • Facilitate yoga as a process of self-regulation, self-compassion, and embodied awareness.

This approach ensures that graduates not only gain intellectual understanding but also the ability to apply trauma-informed principles in real-world teaching and therapeutic contexts.

Upon completion, you will be able to:

  • Explain foundational concepts in trauma theory, neurobiology, and stress response.
  • Describe the role of interoception and co-regulation in healing.
  • Integrate Trauma-Informed sequencing, cueing, and class structure.
  • Maintain ethical awareness and cultural sensitivity in your teaching.
  • Support students in cultivating agency, safety, and presence through practice.

Brooke and Jeanine taught an amazing trauma informed somatic yoga teacher training course. They helped me see I am capable of taking healing into the world. They helped me slow down and practice what was being taught. Everything they offered was done in a safe, gentle and accepting way. I feel more confident in providing trauma informed yoga practices that will help students feel welcome, accepted, capable and safe.

I’ve just completed the 200HR online self‑paced YTT with The Somatic Yoga Institute, and I honestly couldn’t recommend it more. Becoming a yoga teacher was something I thought I’d do “one day”, but this training with Brooke and Jeanine called to me I’m so glad I signed up. Brooke and Jeanine are incredible teachers: deeply knowledgeable, supportive, experienced and professional. The trauma‑informed approach was essential for me. This was delivered with such care and integrity. What impressed me most was that this focus never compromised the quality or depth of the teaching in asana, yoga philosophy or anatomy — everything was rich, thorough and beautifully explained. The resources are outstanding: well‑organised, high‑quality and clearly created with so much thought. Throughout the whole journey, Brooke and Jeanine’s genuine care and support were constant and so appreciated. One of the unexpected gifts of this training was the sense of community it created. Despite being online and spread across different countries and time zones, I felt genuinely connected not just to Brooke and Jeanine, but to fellow students who brought their own experiences, perspectives, and warmth. Geography never felt like a barrier; instead, it became part of what made the community so special. I’m so grateful for this training. It’s been transformative.

I completed Jeanine and Brooke’s 200 training on 9/12/26. They were both phenomenal trainers. The materials were easy to access and thorough. All the calls were organized, thoughtful, and engaging. As an LCSW I was unsure if the trauma education would be redundant, but I found the different perspectives really complimented by clinical work and education.

I recently completed the 50 hour Trauma Informed Yoga training in Portugal (Cocoon Retreat Center) and it was outstanding. The whole training is geared for either mental health professionals or yoga teachers (or BOTH!). I cannot emphasize enough how well versed Jeanine and Brooke are in leading a training. Both were knowledgeable, informed, accessible, and inclusive. I didn't have any set expectations on the training other than being in a learning space - the training, the location, the facilitators FAR exceeded any expectations I could have had prior to attending. It was a wonderful opportunity to create community, tap into intention, be completely inspired, learn and grow not only in my professional life but for myself as a human. Don't hesitate - sign up - you won't regret it.

AVES HOTEL & RESORT

Montezuma is unique from many beach destinations in Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula. Long known for its remote setting, the town is surrounded by beaches, forest, and waterfalls that feel largely untouched. While it has grown over the years, Montezuma has retained a distinct sense of place, offering a quiet beach retreat shaped by the natural beauty.

Various cultural influences can be felt in the outstanding restaurants in the area. Active pursuits abound, from hiking in the Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve to horseback riding to a beach-side waterfall. The hotel itself is also walking distance to a Canopy (zip-line) Tour and a Butterfly Farm Gardens, and the delicious Cocina Clandestina restaurant. As ever, it’s the natural beauty, miles of almost abandoned beaches, rich wildlife, and jungle waterfalls that first made Montezuma famous, and they continue to make this one of the favorite beach towns in Costa Rica.

Getting there:

The quickest option is a short domestic flight from San José to Cobano or Tambor (approximately 20 minutes in length). From there, a taxi can take you directly to AVES.

Another option is a shared shuttle from Juan Santamaría (SJO) International Airport. These typically take 4–5 hours and include a ferry crossing. While convenient for some, this route is longer and involves multiple transitions. Shared shuttles generally cost around $60 each way.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between our Trauma-Informed 200-Hour YTT and a more standard 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training?

In terms of credentials, our Trauma-Informed 200hr meets the same Yoga Alliance standards as any traditional 200hr – so you’ll be fully certified to teach internationally. The main difference is the emphasis: we focus on nervous system education, emotional regulation, accessibility, and teaching yoga in a way that’s supportive for mental health. You’ll be prepared to teach in studios and also feel equipped to work with a wider range of bodies, backgrounds, and therapeutic spaces.

Do I need prior yoga experience to join the Hybrid Costa Rica Yoga Teacher Training?

No prior yoga experience is required to join. Our trainings are open to all levels, and we welcome both newer and more experienced students. Rather than focusing on how “advanced” your yoga practice is, we’re more interested in your emotional readiness to engage with trauma-informed education, nervous system regulation, and the responsibility of holding space for others. In this training, the trauma-informed approach is less about what poses you can do and much more about how you practice and how you teach. We’ll guide you in teaching yoga asana in a way that supports all bodies, offers meaningful options, and helps create an environment that feels inclusive, non-competitive, and non-hierarchical.

What are the nearest airports?

There are several ways to travel to Aves Resort. The most efficient way is to take a small plane from the domestic terminal of San Jose to Cobano. You can book this through Sansa or Costa Rica Greenairways. There is also a shuttle to a ferry option, you can book this through Zuma Tours. The most affordable (but longest) option is to take the public bus called the “7-10” from San Jose to Cobano

What is the total cost?

Tuition is $2700 for this program or $2500 if you pay in full. Room + Board is a separate cost depending on your room choice.

$1200 – Quad Shared (4 people)
$1400 – Triple Shared (max 3 guests)
$1950 – Double (2 people)
$2700 – Private Room

*Flights and transportation are not included. We also offer a limited number of partial scholarships for each training. If finances are a barrier, you’re welcome to fill out our scholarship form – we’d be honored to support you in making this training possible.

Is our Trauma-Informed Costa Rica Yoga Teacher Training Yoga Alliance certified?

Yes, our Hybrid Costa Rica Trauma-Informed Training is certified by Yoga Alliance. Upon completing the training and registering with Yoga Alliance, you will become a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT 200) and be qualified to teach yoga internationally.

What should I pack for this Training?

Check out the packing list on our Costa Rica Welcome Packet (link to page on website once it’s ready). These are simply suggestions – please bring anything that supports your body, comfort, and practice! Click here to check our Montezuma (AVES Resort) welcome packet

Will I have time to visit tourist places in Costa Rica?

There will be one full day off during the 10-day immersion. You’re welcome to spend this day however you’d like – some participants plan an excursion or day trip to Santa Teresa, while others choose to stay on the AVES property to rest, integrate, and recharge. If your schedule allows, we highly recommend arriving a day or two early or staying after the program to explore more of Costa Rica at a relaxed pace. The AVES staff will also share options and recommendations for day-off activities once we arrive.

What is the currency in Costa Rica, and what is the exchange situation?

The currency in Costa Rica is the Costa Rican Colón (CRC), but US dollars are widely accepted in most tourist areas, including at AVES Resort in Montezuma. We also suggest not to use the money exchange in the airport as the rates are high. For currency exchange, you can easily use US dollars in many places, but it’s recommended to carry some local currency for smaller transactions. ATMs are available in nearby towns, such as Cobano, where you can withdraw Colones or US dollars. Keep in mind that ATMs in more remote areas may sometimes run out of cash, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead.

Is a visa needed for Costa Rica?

You will need a valid passport for entry into Costa Rica. US, Canada and EU citizens do not need to get a visa ahead of time.
